Les médias anglophones doivent cesser de diaboliser les souverainistes et les défenseurs du français

Lettre de Mario Beaulieu, président général de la SSJBM La Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Montréal considère que l’attentat politique survenu au rassemblement du Parti Québécois le 4 septembre dernier est un acte isolé de folie, mais qu’il a eu néanmoins un déclencheur socio-politique. C’est pourquoi nous lançons un appel à la modération des médias anglophones québécois et canadiens qui ont multiplié des accusations de xénophobie et toutes sortes d’insinuations calomnieuses à l’endroit des souverainistes ou des défenseurs du français. Plusieurs ont constaté récemment l’émergence d’une inquiétude, sinon un climat de peur dans la population anglophone, qui n’est certainement pas sans rapport avec les dérapages diffusés dans ces médias, et lesquels se font plus fréquents lorsque les enjeux électoraux le commandent. Par exemple, dans The Gazette, le National Post ou le Globe and Mail, on traite les souverainistes québécois ou ceux qui veulent renforcer la loi 101 de franco-suprémacistes, d’intolérants, d’anglophobes, de faucons, de radicaux, d’idiots fermés d’esprit, qui veulent assimiler, détruire et qui méprisent les minorités, etc. Et on diffuse sans retenue des commentaires carrément haineux des lecteurs qui ne se gênent pas de faire des parallèles avec les mouvements fascistes et néo-nazis.
Ces accusations sont profondément injustes. Le projet indépendantiste est aussi légitime que le projet fédéraliste. Le «Nous» canadien n’est pas plus inclusif que le nous québécois. Le multiculturalisme n’est pas supérieur à l’interculturalisme. L’aménagement linguistique québécois est éminemment plus généreux envers la minorité historique anglophone que celui qui prévaut dans le reste du Canada pour les francophones. Pour qu’il y ait un débat démocratique et respectueux, il faut utiliser d’autres moyens de communiquer que de se culpabiliser ou de se diaboliser mutuellement. D’une part, les Québécoises et les Québécois ne doivent plus accepter que des accusations aussi graves soient portées à la légère et à des fins politiquement partisanes. D’autre part, nous sommes convaincus qu’une majorité d’anglophones considère que les Québécoises et les Québécois ont le droit d’assurer la survie et l’épanouissement de leur langue et de leur culture comme tous les autres peuples. La SSJBM a des membres de toutes les langues et de toutes les origines depuis 1834. Des intellectuels et des politiciens anglophones ont défendu la légitimité et l’éthique de la Charte de la langue française. Qu’on pense à Gregory Baum (professeur émérite à l’Université McGill), Ramsay Clark (ex-procureur général des États-Unis), Normand Spector (ex-directeur de cabinet du premier ministre Brian Mulroney) et plusieurs autres. Nous invitons ces éléments anglophones modérés à intervenir davantage. Parce qu’au delà de nos intérêts nationaux respectifs, nous croyons en une vie internationale fondée sur la liberté et la solidarité entre les peuples, et sur la fraternité entre les citoyennes et les citoyens du monde. Il en va de l’avenir de notre vie démocratique en tant que nations québécoise et canadienne, quels que seront nos choix.

«Chez les anglophones, les mots associés à « Marois » sont job, election et interview. Le mot cunt, très vulgaire en anglais, est celui qui se trouve le plus près de Marois, donnant ainsi un aperçu du ton des discussions. Peu ou pas de présence des autres partis (sauf liberal) ou d’autres thèmes de la campagne (sauf education).
